Worlds of Words

A writing workshop just for teens

Are you a teenager who loves to write?

In this workshop, a small group of teens aged 14–17 will meet on Zoom for five classes to discover their writing voices through fun and playful writing exercises.

We’ll dive into new forms of writing, including poetry, fiction, fan fiction, lists, rants, letters, memoir and more. We’ll explore putting our thoughts into words in new ways that are exhilarating, honest, encouraging and super fun.

The workshop will follow closely to the Firefly principle that “there is no way to do this wrong.” Participants will write and write and write, and through that, to trust their voices and share their stories in new, brave ways. We’ll laugh a lot, and make room for #allthefeels.

We’ll end the class with an online reading for friends and family, where each participant will be invited to share some of the work they created.

    • Want to express themselves freely, without rules or inhibitions.

    • Love the idea of trying new things and new ways of doing things.

    • Are looking for new creative buddies.

    • Feel ready (though maybe a little scared) to share their writing in a group.

    • Are interested in exploring their own lives as writing material and sharing some of what comes up. (We tend to get a little personal.)

    • Are curious about creating new characters and worlds.

    • Thrive in small groups — this class will never have more than 8 participants.

    • Feel aligned with our fundamental beliefs.

    • Lots of new writing.

    • A deep sense of your writing voice and your unique gifts as a writer.

    • Writing peers whose work you are invested in.

    • A feeling of creative playfulness and possibility.

    • A fictional character whose voice you can access anytime.

    • Creative courage.

    • Critique or competition. We’re all about the love.

    • Strict rules on “how to write.” We’ll work on developing your writing skills but we don’t subscribe to the idea that there’s one way to create powerful work.

    • Help with grammar or spelling — we want to be with the love of words, not the rules.

    • Pressure to write things you don’t want to write. We go where the joy is.
